About Jackie

Jackie Miao, 31, is a Tourism Marketer, Web Technologist, Blogger, Entrepreneur, Emcee/Host and Travel Presenter.
More recently recognized as the only Malaysian and one of four South East Asians who competed with 36,000 applicants globally to make the Top 50 shortlist vying for the Best Job in the World, Miao has been featured internationally in several media outlets including BBC One, BBC World Radio, NTV 7, The New Straits Times, The Malaysian Star Paper, The Edge, The Malay Mail, Expatriate Lifestyle Magazine, Sin Chew Daily Paper, ASTRO radio (Hitz.fm, Lite.fm, and), The Borneo Post, Sabah Times, Overseas Chinese Daily News and others. In instances unrelated to the Island Reef Job, Miao has also been featured in The New York Times (1998), Discovery Channel Asia (2004), ASTRO Ria (2006), TV3 (1990), and Teenage Magazine (1992).
Miao grew up around hotels and the tourism industry through her family’s company Coral Island Cruises, which operated live-aboard diving excursions to oceanic islands, land and sea tours in and around Sabah, Malaysia. Her love for travel was inspired by her father, whose adventures around the world had fueled her wanderlust since she was a young girl. Since 1995 Jackie has studied, lived and worked in Honolulu, New York City, Kuala Lumpur and London, England.
WEB DEVELOPMENT IN THE UNITED STATES
Jackie’s career building digital products for Fortune 500 and Bluechip clients span across different roles over 12 years between the United States, United Kingdom and Asia Pacific. Miao is an award-winning web developer in the United States, whose work on the British Airways account in 1998/1999 helped earn the nationally-coveted Addy Award from the American Advertising Federation for Agency.com. TOURISM MARKETING IN ASIA
In 2001, Miao moved back to Malaysia and founded Centroworks Sdn. Bhd., a small interactive consultancy in specializing in web development and online marketing strategy for luxury travel, hospitality and lifestyle clients in the Asia Pacific region. As Executive Director her responsibilities include new business development, planning and strategy, overseeing production, account management and project management. PROJECT MANAGEMENT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
After 5 years, Jackie decided it was time to explore other landscapes and found herself in London doing digital project management for an advertising agency during her 2-year Work-Holiday. Miao spent 5 months contracting at McCann Erickson London, where she managed the production of digital projects for UPS, Genworth Financial, L’oreal, HP, The Evening Standard, and BMW Bikes. PRESENTING, HOSTING & EMCEE WORK IN MALAYSIA
Her presenting work includes hosting the 1st Blaupunkt Sound Challenge in Asia and emceeing for Manhunt International (Sabah Selection). Miao was also a Malaysian semi-finalist for the Discovery Channel Globe Trekker Search for a Host competition held in 2004. English is her first language and she speaks conversational Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka and Bahasa Melayu.
In her spare time, she is active in athletic pursuits which include endurance running, mountain biking, and other outdoor sports. Miao is also passionate about music, film and reading. Her life passion includes going places, exploring ideas and connecting with people.
